Marvel dropped a bombshell at their New York Comic-Con panel today, announcing Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson in Joss Whedon's live-action television series Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. The actor made a surprise appearance at the Marvel Television Presents panel, promoting Ultimate Spiderman.

This comes as welcome news, especially after Gregg's well-received appearances in recent Marvel films. Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. will be produced by Joss and Jed Whedon, along with Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, made famous by Clark Gregg in various Marvel movies (including the upcoming The Avengers), finally made his much-anticipated print debut in the pages of this week's Battle Scars #6.

Fortunately for fans, the comic version of Coulson is the same cool, wisecracking, everyman character Gregg brought to the screen.

"He's the viewpoint of the audience. He's the normal guy who's encountering all this strange superhuman stuff and reacting to it," said Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort.

Gregg told USA Today that he's "pretty fired up" about being turned into a comic book star.

Marvel Studios released a full set of five Avengers character posters last month, featuring a lineup of the movie's good guys, including the six Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D's Nick Fury and Maria Hill.

But they missed someone important, as fans of Clark Gregg's character, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson, were quick to point out.

Not to worry, though: Marvel has now given Coulson his own promo poster, where he steals the spotlight from no less than Director Fury himself, and he's looking pretty sharp for a guy in the middle of an alien attack.

Now all we need is another great Coulson one-shot for the Blu-ray special features.
