Chronicle director Josh Trank has signed on for the big-screen adaptation of Christian Gossett's graphic novel The Red Star, which is set in a mythic version of Soviet Russia where the Red Army has access to magic and flying warships called Skyfurnaces.

Trank was apparently also in talks to direct some larger superhero movies, including Fox's Fantastic Four reboot and Sony's Spider-Man spin-off, Venom, but Red Star was his first offer for a film with a writer already attached.

Warner Bros. and Neal Moritz will produce The Red Star and Jason Rothenberg (The Twilight Zone) will write the screenplay.

Although this is the first movie adaptation for the Red Star, the comic series has already spawned a video game and a tabletop RPG.
