Non-Lethal, Super-Adorable Portal Turret of the Day

It may not have ballistic capabilities, but this otherwise fully-functional Portal turret might just kill you with cuteness.

And no, this one-of-a-kind unit is not for sale. It was posted on the Valve Store's own Facebook page, presumably sitting in the offices to guard development of Half-Life 3.

The long-awaited Team Fortress 2 short, Meet the Pyro, has finally been released. And it's a doozy.

Snuck into the very end is a website, Source Filmmaker, which is a Valve-based movie creation tool within their Source engine. Is this part of the teased collaboration with Adult Swim? Only time will tell. In the meantime, you can sign up for the Source Filmmaker beta on the website.

Steam for Linux of the Day

Steam for Linux of the Day

Just a year after Valve released a Mac version of its popular Steam gaming service, Gaben and Co. are bringing Steam to Linux, according to a Linux blogger who has been to Valve HQ to see the progress of the port.

Michael Larabel of Phoronix says Valve has been working on Linux versions of Steam and the Source engine for some time, but the project took off recently after Gabe Newell himself stepped into a lead role.

Larabel got to test a beta version of Steam, running on Ubuntu, and he said that it works with one game right now: Left 4 Dead 2. L4D2 is a great test case, though, because it uses a recent implementation of Source.

Valve intends to port the rest of its back catalog to Linux once L4D2 is done, making them, in Larabel's opinion, "the most Linux-friendly game company."

Valve Denies Console Rumors of the Day

Don't get too excited about Valve's rumored Steam Box console just yet. The company has denied that it's currently developing a set-top box to support its Steam gaming platform.

Valve's Doug Lombardi says it's true that Valve employees were building custom PC hardware, but not for a new console. The computer making the rounds last week via a Valve developer's Twitter account was a test device for the company's Big Picture Mode, a new feature that will allow users to connect a Steam-enabled PC to their TVs.

While that's something like a set-top box, "it's a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware," Lombardi told Kotaku.

He refused to rule out the possibility that Valve may one day ship its own console, though.

Combined with Gabe Newell's previous commments that "we think [hardware is] important enough that if that's what we end up having to do, then that's what we end up having to do," that leaves the door open for Steam Box somewhere down the road.

Sure, maybe sometime after Half-Life 3 is ready.
