We've come quite a long way since Don't Ask Don't Tell.

President Obama announced his nomination for the next Secretary of the Army Sept. 18 and it's Eric Fanning, an openly gay man.

If confirmed, Fanning would take over for current Secretary John McHugh who will soon leave the post.

Reuters has more details on the appointment:

Fanning is currently serving as acting Army undersecretary, and previously worked as Air Force undersecretary and chief of staff to U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter. His nomination to the post must still be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

"Eric brings many years of proven experience and exceptional leadership to this new role," Obama said in a statement. "I am confident he will help lead America's soldiers with distinction."

Carter called Fanning's nomination "an excellent choice" by Obama and said he hoped for a quick Senate confirmation.

A quick confirmation might not be in store if history is any indication. President Obama has had more nominations blocked by Senate filibuster threat than any other president.

You've probably heard by now that residents of at least 20 U.S. states have submitted petitions to the White House's "We the People" website in an attempt to secede from the Union. Largely initiated by bitter conservatives in reaction to President Obama's re-election last week, the "secession movement" is already turning into a self-parody phenomenon with far-fetched petitions like Justice for Missouri Secession, which demands that the Obama administration grant a pizza party for every remaining U.S. citizen.

The latest meme workshop from Reddit is based on an Associated Press photograph of President Obama on the phone at a campaign fundraiser event in Orlando, FL. According to ABC News reporter Devin Dwyer, the photograph was taken right after Obama realized that he had called the wrong number, who was quoted as saying:

"Hi is this Ann? Hi, is this Ann? Oh, I'm sorry, I must have the wrong number."

Well, if the President of the United States calls you by accident, I guess you just gotta deal with it.
