The latest from the post-election pipeline: the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has voted in favor of becoming the 51st state for the first time ever. Since being recognized as an unincorporated U.S. territory in 1898, the residents have consistently voted against statehood (three times in 1967, 1993 and 1998), but the island's Secretary of State Kenneth McClintock says the declining job market and migration of residents from the island have had a significant impact on this year's referendum, in which 54 percent of the voters rejected the continuation of the status quo and 61 percent of the voters chose statehood as the alternative. While some analysts believe that the official vote and recognition in the U.S. Congress won't likely take place until 2015, Redditors have already created variations of American flags with 51 stars in celebration of the news (shown left).
