Amandla Stenberg, the 13-year-old who plays Rue in The Hunger Games film, has responded to the barrage of racist tweets that came her way from alleged fans of the book series.
"As a fan of the books, I feel fortunate to be part of The Hunger Games family," read her statement to Us Weekly. "It was an amazing experience; I am proud of the film and my performance. I want to thank all of my fans and the entire Hunger Games community for their support and loyalty."
Both Stenberg and Dayo Okeniyi, who played Thresh, were the subject of many racist tweets over the opening weekend of the film.
In the book, written by Suzanne Collins, both characters are described as having "dark brown skin," but there was an outcry from racist fans who were upset by the casting of black actors.
Okeniyi's rep said the actor had no comment.
